This is where I got snared into having a game of draughts against a bloke called Ferris. Out of six games the most moves I got was six. I was then casually informed that no one had ever beaten Ferris at draughts. Ferris had a face like an out-of-work bloodhound, but he certainly could play draughts.

By the way, the billiard room had a pillar that was holding up the ceiling. One day when I was playing billiards, someone called out to me and as I turned to answer I walked straight into the pillar and got a black eye.

On parade the next day the Sgt asked me why I had been fighting and I told him I had walked into a pillar in the billiard room.

"Aye weel, yer supposed tae be awake an' stay awake when ye gets oot yer bed in the mornin', laddie", quoth the Sgt.
